The athlete and the game
The Argentine footballer Lionel Messi has Mars, the planet associated with physical energy, adrenalin and the potency to overcome obstacles in his second house, the sector of the birth chart that represents natural talents, personal values and the way to generate economic resources.
Mars is always very strong in the birth chart of athletes and champions because it is an indicator of vitality, the personal survival instinct, the competitive spirit and the strength of the body. It also means: courage, passion and the willpower.
Mars is in conjunction with Mercury, the planet that is associated with the figure of Hermes, the mythological character that is illustrated in artistic representations with winged sandals. He slides freely through the air in one or another direction, according to his convenience, using ingenious and surprising tricks.
According to mythology, Hermes was a baby when suddenly he woke up and taking advantage of the fact that his mother was not there, jumped from his cradle at the first opportunity, left the house and when he found a turtle. He interpreted this as an omen of good luck and he played with her. With the reptile’s shell he invented the first musical instrument, the lyre.
On another occasion, the young Hermes felt hungry, went out to find some food and ended up stealing a cow from the god Apollo. However, so that nobody could find out, he made sandals out of bark to put on the cattle the wrong way round, so that it looked as if they were walking in the opposite direction. This is the origin of the duality associated to Gemini, ruled by Mercury.
Later, Apollo arrived at Hermes’ house and asked him if he had stolen his cow, to which the boy answered that he was only a small and naive baby, unable to have done anything like that.
Hermes captivated Apollo when he played music with his lyre (origin of the word “liar”) after what the leader of Olympus made him promise that he would not lie to him ever again. The young Hermes replied that he had decided not always to tell the truth.
Apollo proposed exchanging the lyre for the herald staff and he employed him full time as his messenger, from an early age. From then on, Hermes always intervened when the citizens of Olympus needed to get out of a tight corner. Later Hermes taught his son Autolikos to steal but in relation to the witness of a game, not the antisocial kind.
In the story, Mercury achieves the coordination of his body at a very early age and he does it with grace, that is why he became patron of youth and athletes.
Mercury is the stronger planet in Messi’s birth chart, because it not only rules the Ascendant and the Imun Coeli, two angles of the chart, associated to events in life, but it is also involved with the three stars associated with collective aspects: Neptune, dreams; Uranus, the vision of progress and Pluto, passion.
